THEOplayer (Dolby OptiView Player) alternative

A THEOplayer alternative for CTV, DAI and Flutter

THEOplayer is a good player, and Dolby has the money to keep it that way. What changed is the deal around it: prices you have to ask for, a portfolio that reaches far past playback, and a support relationship you build again inside a much bigger company.

Quick answer

Bradmax

Bradmax suits teams that need CTV and TV web apps, dynamic and server-side ad insertion under real volume, Flutter and WebView playback, and a straight line to the engineers who build the player. Prices are published, from EUR 99 a month.

THEOplayer

THEOplayer suits teams that need Dolby-branded procurement, the widest catalogue of pre-built integrations, sub-second WebRTC latency, or native SDKs on consoles and set-top boxes.

Where THEOplayer is strong

Playback performance

THEOplayer is widely regarded as best in class on startup time and adaptive bitrate behaviour. A decade of live sports deployments built that reputation.

The broadest integration catalogue

More than 200 pre-built integrations for DRM, ads and analytics across web, mobile, TV, set-top box and console, plus six optimised SDKs.

Low-latency work

A co-founder of the HESP alliance, with LL-HLS and LL-DASH support, and Millicast for sub-second WebRTC delivery since Dolby.

Developer experience

Open Video UI, open-source connectors and documentation that is genuinely thorough.

Dolby backing

Since July 2024 THEOplayer is part of Dolby. That buys capital, brand recognition and procurement credibility we cannot match on paper, and it is worth saying plainly.

Where Bradmax fits better

Published pricing, well under their entry point

Bradmax tiers run from EUR 99 to EUR 399 a month and all of them are public. THEOplayer entry pricing has been reported at around EUR 395 a month, with everything above that quote-based. On a mid-market budget, that gap usually decides the shortlist.

A player-only vendor

Bradmax does one thing: playback across screens. There is no encoder, no ad network and no parent portfolio competing for engineering attention.

Dynamic ad insertion as a core product

Bradmax runs 13M+ dynamic ad insertion streams a month, with SCTE-35 workflows proven at TISA. Server-side and dynamic insertion is not a bolt-on here.

Flutter and WebView playback that ships

TISA runs six sports leagues on Flutter, with Bradmax playing through the WebView bridge. If a Flutter or hybrid app is on your roadmap, that path is proven rather than promised.

White-label and reseller

A white-label player, partner API keys and a reseller program, for software houses and CDNs that sell playback under their own brand.

Direct access to the engineers

Support is answered by the people who build the player, with response times published on our support page.

Migration path

Both players take standard HLS and DASH manifests, so a migration is configuration work, not a re-encode. Our migration guides map the integration concepts one by one, and the TISA case study is a full vendor replacement delivered in weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is THEOplayer being discontinued?

No. There is no public announcement of a discontinuation. Dolby acquired THEO Technologies in July 2024 and the product now sits in the Dolby OptiView line. The player carries on. What is worth planning around is the rebranding: it now lives inside a much larger portfolio with its own priorities.

How much does THEOplayer cost?

THEOplayer does not publish a price list. Public reporting has put the former Starter tier at around EUR 395 a month, with larger deals quoted. Check their site for current terms. We deliberately do not restate a competitor price as if it were ours to set.

Can I keep my existing HLS and DASH streams?

Yes. Bradmax plays standard HLS, MPEG-DASH and Smooth Streaming manifests, so the switch is configuration work rather than a re-encode or a repackage.

How long does a migration take?

Weeks, not quarters, for a standard web and TV deployment. TISA replaced a vendor that had already shut down, without interrupting its live sports calendar.

Do you have native SDKs?

No. Bradmax is one web-based codebase delivered to web, TV web apps and mobile WebViews, with Flutter and Angular bridges. One QA surface instead of six. If a native Java or Objective-C SDK is a hard requirement, THEOplayer is the better fit.
